ISO 45001

ISO 45001:2018 is the international standard for occupational health and safety management systems. It replaced OHSAS 18001 in 2018 and uses the Annex SL high-level structure shared with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, so a site certified to two or three of the standards runs one integrated management system rather than parallel ones. The ten clauses follow Plan-Do-Check-Act: context of the organisation, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation, and improvement.

The clauses that change day-to-day work are clause 6 (hazard identification, risk assessment, and the hierarchy of controls), clause 7 (competence and worker participation), and clause 9 (monitoring, internal audit, and management review). ISO 45001 is the OH&S overlay that a customer or a regulator asks for; it is not a substitute for the operational safety program underneath it, and a certificate without the underlying program is a finding waiting to be written.
