Permit-to-work management

Digital PTW from request through surrender — no clipboards, no paper chase.

Hot work, confined space, and excavation permits are issued, approved, monitored, and surrendered digitally. Gas-test readings, attendant logs, and emergency contacts are captured in the permit record, giving auditors a complete chain of custody.

The problem

  • Paper permits are illegible, misplaced, or never surrendered
  • No visibility into how many live permits are active across a site
  • Expired training or certifications let unqualified workers obtain permits
  • Audit trails exist only as scanned PDF bundles

How it works

A step-by-step walkthrough of this use case in QEHS.

  1. Request the permit

The job supervisor opens the permit template, fills in work description, location, and planned start time.

  2. Run pre-work checks

The area isolator completes the pre-work checklist — gas test, combustibles cleared, fire watch assigned.

  3. Approve and issue

The area authority reviews all checks and digitally signs to issue the permit.

  4. Monitor mid-shift

Mid-shift re-check hold points remind the attendant to re-test and re-sign. The permit auto-suspends if a check is missed.

  5. Surrender and close

At job completion, the supervisor QR-scans the permit to surrender it. The area authority countersigns and the record closes.
