AS9100 — Aerospace QualityAS9100

AS9100 Rev D is the quality management system standard for the aerospace, space, and defense supply chain, and it layers the aerospace-specific requirements onto the ISO 9001:2015 base — the product and process risk management, the configuration management that controls the part and the change across the lifecycle, the first article inspection that proves the first part of a new run meets the drawing, the key characteristics the customer designates as the ones that matter, and the foreign object damage — FOD — prevention that keeps the debris out of the engine and the airframe. The standard is published by SAE and overseen by the International Aerospace Quality Group, the IAQG, and the certification is by the IAQG-recognised registrars under the OASIS database.

AS9100 is required by the aerospace primes — Boeing, Airbus, Lockheed Martin, the space and defense primes — as a condition of doing business, and the Tier 1 supplier that does not hold the certification does not bid. The aerospace quality burden is heavier than the generic ISO 9001 because the consequence of a defect is different — a defect in a consumer product is a return, a defect in a flight-critical part is a hull loss — so the standard adds the risk management, the configuration management, the traceability, and the FAI on top of the base. The relationship to FMEA and NCR is direct: the AS9100 system runs the risk analysis and the nonconformance loop on the same record the base system would, with the aerospace-specific evidence the registrar audits.
